Survey Design to Monitor Drug Efficacy for the Control of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis and Schistosomiasis

چکیده

Abstract Background Control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis relies heavily on regular preventive chemotherapy. Monitoring drug efficacy is crucial to provide early warning treatment failures. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a survey design in which only egg-positive individuals are retested after treatment. Although this practice makes more efficient use resources, it may lead biased estimates. Methods We performed simulation study assess the potential for bias when evaluating using Organization–recommended design, identify alternative designs that less affected by bias. These were also based selection individuals, but involve retesting them second time at baseline up 2 times follow-up. utility different was compared fairly constraining same budget. Results standard procedure selecting can introduce substantial positive due regression toward mean, particularly infection levels or low. This completely eliminated sample, conditionally first sample being excluded from analysis. Precision estimates be improved increasing number thick smears and/or samples per person follow-up, despite fewer tested within Conclusions present optimized monitor field settings, highly relevant sustained control helminths schistosomiasis, as well onchocerciasis lymphatic filariasis.

Prevention and control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis

The burden of disease associated with helminth infections (schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections) is enormous, with at least 2 billion people affected worldwide. This is being increasingly recognized as a significant public health problem, particularly in developing countries, where poverty, poor nutrition, inadequate sanitation, lack of clean drinking-water and minimal...

Prevention and control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis.

This report contains the recommendations of a WHO Expert Committee convened to consider the prevention and control of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections. Although these infections remain major public health concerns in many parts of the world, particularly in the poorest developing countries, cost-effective solutions are both available and deliverable. The report reviews t...

Accuracy of Coverage Survey Recall following an Integrated Mass Drug Administration for Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis.

BACKGROUND Achieving target coverage levels for mass drug administration (MDA) is essential to elimination and control efforts for several neglected tropical diseases (NTD). To ensure program goals are met, coverage reported by drug distributors may be validated through household coverage surveys that rely on respondent recall. This is the first study to assess accuracy in such surveys. METHO...

Nationwide cross-sectional survey of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Sudan: study protocol

BACKGROUND Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STHs) are target neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) of preventive chemotherapy, but the control and elimination of these diseases have been impeded due to resource constraints. Few reports have described study protocol to draw on when conducting a nationwide survey. We present a detailed methodological description of the integrated ...

Control of Schistosomiasis and Soil- Transmitted Helminthiasis in Sub-Saharan Africa: Challenges and Prospects

Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are the most common types of parasitic infections in the world. These diseases have major health and socio-economic repercussions, and constitute an important public health problem in developing countries. Human schistosomiasis is caused by six species of schistosomes, i.e. Schistosoma haematobium, Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonic...
